QuakeLive Game for Linux and Mac

Announced last week at QuakeCon 2009, the Mac and Linux versions of Quake Live is now active and can be accessed on your Apple or penguin-powered personal computer.

Just head on over to QuakeLive.com and register, download the plug-in, and get fragging. I loaded it up in Linux 3D OS and found it a little buggy. What is your experience with Quake Live on Linux Or Mac so far?

About Quake Live:

Quake Live is a browser plugin-based first person shooter video game developed by id Software, which first appeared in 2007. It is a variant of its predecessor, Quake III Arena, running a slightly updated version of this game's engine. The focus is on usability enhancements rather than graphical upgrades, including the plugin that runs compile code on the user's processor and a more streamlined heads-up display. Notably, this game doesn't make use of Adobe's Flash technology to run. Quake Live is free to play, as financial backing for this project comes from in-game advertising.

Don't expect any graphical wonders from this game; based on a title released in 1999, it's meant to have a quick and simple installation procedure for casual gaming or maybe aid team-bonding through lunch break tournaments.

Sauerbraten / Cube 2

Sauerbraten, also known as Cube 2 or Sauer, is a partially (not all data is) open source Quake-like first-person shooter computer game that runs on Windows, GNU/Linux, FreeBSD and Mac OS X. The game uses OpenGL and SDL, features single-player and multiplayer gameplay and contains a built in level editor.

Sauerbraten is a branch of the computer game Cube and expands its original concept.It shares most of design goals and philosophy with Cube, but is using a new 6-directional heightfield world model. This allows much more complex level geometry and easier editing. Much like the original Cube, the aim of this game is not necessarily to produce the most features & eyecandy possible, but rather to allow map/geometry editing to be done dynamically in-game, to create fun gameplay and an elegant engine. The engine supporting the game is entirely original in code & design, and its code is Open Source (ZLIB license)

On the DVD : 3D OS Game Center Edition
Menu : Start > Games > Adventure > Sauerbraten

Among its new features added to the original Cube are:
* 3D floors (also known as Floor-over-floor)
* Editing Cubes on all six sides (including pushing/pulling faces/corners, etc.)
* Lightmaps (with shadows)
* New weapons (pistol and grenade launcher)
* New gamemodes (Capture)
* New physics (notably, grenades can bounce about)
* MD3 player-model support
* Pixel shaders
* Normal mapping
* dot3 lightmap / radiosity lightmap for normalmaps
* Separation of the gameplay and engine sourcecode
* Color coding for the console
* Better server control
* Voice announcer

Changes to the gameplay include the addition of two new weapons, the pistol and the grenade launcher. A new game mode, capture, has also been added. This mode is similar to the Domination mode in Unreal Tournament. Other gameplay changes include voice announcements for gameplay events and automatic team selection. A Browning 9 millimeter Hi-Power Ordnance pistol of the French Navy, 19th century, using a Percussion cap mechanism Derringers were small and easily hidden. ... A grenade launcher is weapon that fires or launches a grenade to longer distances than a soldier could throw by hand. ... Unreal Tournament, abbreviated UT, (sometimes referred to as UT99, UT Classic, UT1, or UT:GOTY to differentiate from Unreal Tournament 2003, Unreal Tournament 2004, and Unreal Tournament 3 is a popular first-person shooter video game. ...

Some of the changes to the server include optimized networking code, server-side demo recording, and a "master mode" allowing players to control the server. A game server is a server used by game clients. ...

The game currently has singleplayer and multiplayer modes. Multiplayer functionality is possible with LAN, Local, and Internet play, which gets its server data from a master server. Online offers deathmatch, instagib, last man standing, and "capture" gameplay (where teams vie over control of points on the map), as well as online cooperative map editing, which is one of Sauerbraten's most interesting and popular features. There are also single player modes featuring both episodic gameplay and also deathmath on multiplayer maps with AI bots instead of human opponents over the internet.

Second Life - Virtual World

Second Life : Live Your Virtual Life in a Virtual World

Second Life, established in 2002 by San Francisco based software company Linden Lab, is an alternative online game currently hyped by the media. It is based on fully customizable avatars evolving in a virtual 3D space and and incorporates a variety social networking tools. Joining is easy: You can sign up Second Life for free.

Users, called residents, create an alter ego and enter the scene as mere standard creatures. They then get to alter their avatar according to their wishes and preferences. In order to do so, Second Life residents pay any changes to their avatar or their environment with money - called Linden Dollars.

On the DVD : 3D OS Game Center Edition
Menu : Start > Games > Online > Second Life

Unlike in the real world, everything in Second Life can be created and altered according to your wishes. Be it your body or looks, real estate or clothing – sky is the limit. Second Life residents can use their avatars to wander around in the virtual landscape or may even be teleported to various Spots using a specific SLurl, a Second Life specific address.

They meet many new people and interact on various levels. Communication is a central element. Thus among the SL features you will find chat and messaging tools. Even private encounters – and (pseudo) sexual activities are possible. Everything can happen without the restrictions of the real life. Second Life is the perfect metaverse.

Linden Lab also created Teen Second Life targeted at adolescents from 13 to 17 as a response to many underage registrations. According to official Second Life statistics, about 3,5 million accounts have already been created with about 10% being weekly users.

Just like Ebay, Second Life seems to become a money generator for many of its members. More than 20,000 people actually earn more money than they spent inside the game: They create and sell items, clothes, houses – virtually everything you can imagine. It thus gives a certain twist to the entire game. Especially, because registration is completely free of charge.

Online Games Linux : Savage - The Battle for Newerth

Online Games Linux : Savage - The Battle for Newerth is a fantasy / science fiction computer game that combines aspects of real-time strategy and First-person shooter in a game. The producers of the game described as a 'Real Time Strategy Shooter', or 'RTSS. " The consultations will take place in the distant future, when man has (after an apocalypse) rebuilt society, but is threatened by intelligent beasts.

The goal of Savage is to destroy your opponents Stronghold / Lair, because that's the main point where the Soldiers spawn (they can also spawn of garrisons / sublairs (which can be built) and spawn flags (which can not)).

On the DVD : 3D OS Game Center Edition
Menu : Start > Games > Online > Savage Newerth

Savage is played entirely online with other human players. The game has two or more teams (mostly humans vs. animals, but other configurations, such as Human vs. Human, its possible). Each team has a commander, who plays the game as a Real-Time Strategy game. She weapons research, city buildings are constructed, and of course commands everyone. Anyone who clicks on the button first to proceed to the Commander, which can naturally lead to a number of problems with bad commanders and the like. To combat the team can call an impeachment vote (removal of the current commander), or they can vote for the election of a new commander. It is also easy for new players to go and learn to command on empty servers.

The remaining 1 to 63 players in the team are the soldiers, and they play as a First-Person Shooter, although most of the fighting is done in a Third-Person Melee combat style. Most of their work concerns the killing of the enemies, but they can also help build buildings and collection of funds. Some soldiers can be promoted to the rank of officer by their commander. Officers can assist in coordinating the other soldiers, and can cooperate with the commander to coordinate attacks that the commander failed to meet their fate. These slowly officers regenerate their own health as that of any other team-mates close to them.

There are also more than ten workers on both team, but they are directly controlled by the commander, and are usually used for the construction and resources, although they may be ordered to attack (but not much damage).

The soldiers fighting with a melee weapon, which is unique to their unit, and a selectable ranged weapon, which no unit restrictions (The beasts can choose to melee weapon as an alternative to the use of a weapon ranged). They have three slots to hold items. For humans, these items are Med Packs, Ammo Packs, Land Mines, Demolition Packs, Immobilizers, sensors, disrupt, and Relocaters. The beasts can choose between Mana Crystals, "Frenzy" crystal, sixth sense, Snare, Fire Wards, Sacrifice, Storm Shields, and Mist shrouds.

Each race has unique strengths and weaknesses. The beasts are proficient at melee attacks, as stressed by their ability to jump towards their enemies and by the fact that their first line weapon is completely melee based. Humans, on the other hand, focus on ranged attacks more, as evidenced by their lack of special melee weapons, and their ability to do something for them.

Dofus is Beautiful

dofus0011.jpgThere’s just something about beautiful looking RPGs. Especially those that derive a lot of asian influence from anime styles. Dofus was just another MMORPG. Or so I thought. The attraction to it really came from the beautiful artist renditions of the game, but even so, seeing the screenshots were the deal sealer.

This game was done up in Flash, which isn’t a very obvious choice for most online games, but it was definitely something to try out first. But installation wasn’t easy for a Mac user. Perhaps it’s easier with the Windows client, but I didn’t test it out.

Installation was a pain because although it was just a Macromedia Flash launcher, you had to set it up so that Flash would trust loading files from a certain directory (the installation one) and would allow it to cache files in that directory. This is because when you load the game, bits and pieces are stored in the game folder outside of your usual fun user interface. After toying with the settings a bit, and clicking the solution help that was actually helpful, we were off to the races.

What was tremendously interesting was the amount of thought that went into designing each and every race. Each server had different world on them that I could tell, and each one had multiple subworlds that could be visited. With character creation, you first chose a race. There were twelve races in all, and each of them all had their own special skillsets, weaknesses, and advantages. Everything was spelled out to the “T” and there was a sudden flashback to rolling the dice and seeing what the Dungeonmaster said about my necromancer. Yes, the world seemed to be in a nice RPG heaven.

dofus002.jpg Most MMORPGs have questing as a secondary source of experience and such. But I didn’t have high hopes here due to Flash and most browser games are not as complex or complicated. Boy, that was the wrong assumption. It came out that you start straight up exploring the world. You’re not expected to do battle at all with anyone unless you choose to do so, just don’t click the monsters randomly like I did. Even better is that the first sub-world seemed to have all the levels of the monsters posted right there. You don’t want to get squashed, don’t fight the guys bigger than you. Talk to anyone with a first and last name since those were quest people. Anyone with a Guild or one name? Another player. And it was actually fun!

Graphics wise, they stuck to what they were good at and the limitations of Flash. Since Flash for the most part can only handle 2D animations, they did what the next best thing was. 2D overlayed on a pseudo-3D field. Think Final Fantasy Tactics as far as a field layout, and using the old Final Fantasy characters that ran and walked up and down by flipping the legs. Pretty much similar to that, but a bit more complex on the actual switches and movement. The nice thing about this is that they basically maneuvered the artist’s concept art directly into the game. There pretty much is no difference in the characters except the game itself is more in a miniature form.

I spent a good deal of time just exploring and messing with the quests. Questing is pretty simple for beginners since all you do is do whatever they tell you to do. Most of it was… go here, go talk to this person. Go there! Go talk to that person. Or fight, this, that, or another beastie. Not too complex. The battle sequences are done on a turn-based timer. You have a limited amount of time to figure out what you want to do on the battle grid. Then you make the move and set up the fight. Never did manage to get to a spell casting yet so I’m not sure how it works out, but I’ll dabble with it later.

dofus004.jpg Any limitations or bugs? Sure. It’s flash. The game is complex enough that it was easy to find a way to cheat yourself out of death if you managed to take on someone you really didn’t have a chance in hell of beating. You could run, but I didn’t see a flee option. So I just quit the game. Apparently if you log off in a battle, then nothing is saved and you go back to a spawn position. Very cool. Phew… didn’t want to die there. I don’t believe I’ve had this much fun with a Flash game before and it’ll be interesting if I would with any others. The truly great test will be to test this game on the Wii and see if it can handle it. This definitely would be a great RPG for the Wii… maybe even better than Adventure Quest in my opinion.

Not sure because your kid might want to play? No problem. At least according to Ankama Games, this game is rated 12+. Worried you can’t get a spot after getting bitten by the bug? No problem. You can subscribe and pay for premium services for a pay only server. The pay versions allow you to subscribe with a number of choices:
1 week: 6.90USD
3 weeks: 20.00USD
6 months: 38.00USD
1 year: 65.00USD

Also a very nice fact that you could pay with usual Visa or Mastercard, but they also had a variety of other payment methods that are often seen in micropayment type games. I was actually somewhat surprised that they supported Paypal. With 2 million accounts and counting, there’s a lot to choose from! If I had more time to spare, I would probably be continuing the quests and trying to see if I could find the Dofus. Alas, I’m only level 2, and there’s 100 maximum levels so it’ll be a while.

Extreme Tux Racer - A race simulator with... penguins!

Extreme Tux Racer

A race simulator with... penguins!

Extreme Tux Racer is an open-source downhill racing game starring Tux, the Linux mascot. It follows in the path of Tux Racer and its derivatives.

Features:
* racing game
* racing simulator
* open source game
* Tux Racer fork

After a hard day at work, you decide to relax and play a nice game on your Linux system. As you don't want anything too complex that could require a lot of attention, you decide to find a game that's simple and fun to play. Based on the fact that Tux, the penguin, is the most popular guy in the Linux world (besides Linus Torvalds, of course), you could try Extreme Tux Racer, a very popular racing simulation game where you drive... Tux! You control the popular penguin as it slides on the mountain, to catch as many herrings as possible. Also, you will have to finish the race in time, or you'll lose.

The game menu is nice, packed up with some cool things... cold as ice, I could say. The cursor is an icicle and on the background you see snowflakes falling, which will swarm around your cursor when you move it around the menu.

Speaking of the main menu, here's what you can find in it:

1. Enter a campaign
2. Practice
3. Highscore
4. Configuration
5. Credits
6. Quit

If you want to see who worked on Extreme Tux Racer, so you can enjoy the game, you should click on "Credits". This will also show you what version of ETR you're running and a short info about it. After you satisfy your curiosity about the persons behind ETR, you should go through "Configuration" and set the game to fit you. The menu is not so well organized, which I'm sure you'll also notice. For example, we have "Graphics" and "Video". It would have been nice if there was only one category for graphics. Another thing that seemed odd was the fact that the user had to select the language of the game from... "Graphics". From "Video" you can change your resolution as well as the color depth and you can enable FSAA (Full-Scene Anti-Aliasing). If you enable this option - and if your card supports it - you will enjoy a much smoother gameplay. Also, you will notice that everything looks much better after you select FSAA.

In "Audio" you can opt for sound effects and music or none of them, the bits per sample and samples per second. The "Keyboard" menu lets you select what keys to use for the actions Tux will take in the game, like turn left/right, paddle (which is an interesting feature that can help you only in some moments of the game, while in others it will make things much harder), jump (you will have to press the assigned key and hold it, then when a jump is imminent, release it and create a larger jump), trick (Tux will do a trick in mid-air) and reset (resets Tux's position back on the track).

Okay, after configuring the game, it's time to play! I recommend you to start with Practice, before selecting "Enter a campaign". This way, you get a hang on how everything works in the game, and there's nothing to limit you. Also, you can test all the tracks available in the game and get used to them before you take on them. I almost forgot about the fact that you can select the way Tux will go down the slope: using a snowboard or on its own belly. It's funnier if you see it go down the slope on its belly, though. By the way, Tux looks a little bit weird, like it is made of plastic, or maybe it's something inflatable.

I've started practicing, so I can learn some tricks with Tux. The HUD is made up of a timer, the number of herrings you catch, a speedometer and the current race progress. I managed to get to a speed of 200 km/h, which is very fast for a fat penguin like Tux! Some big holes in the tracks did a great job in stopping me to get to the finish line, but I found a way to get past them (this is called cheating, right?). If I press "R" just before the moment I get into one of these gaps, my position is reset somewhere safe, and I can think about a way to get past the gap next time.

I think it's somewhat hard to find which track is designed for a beginner and which one is for an expert. There's nothing in the menu to select the difficulty level, but there's a way to differentiate which of the tracks are harder: those that are not available from the start of the game seem to be for experienced users. For every track, you have a limited number of tries - or lives - to complete it and advance to the next one.

The Good:

Extreme Tux Racer is one of the games that help you relax after some hard work and I think it's very good for children, mostly because there's no violence in it, and it's also funny.

The Bad:

The menu is not very organized, and Tux looks like a plastic puppet; also, when it is on the snowboard, Tux looks like the board is glued to it. I think that after playing ETR once, you get bored with it, as it is not very interactive.

The Truth:

I found out from "Credits", in the main menu, that a new version of Extreme Tux Racer is being worked on and it will be much more different than those we were used to. I can hardly wait for this version, maybe the developers will make it look and perform better. And the most important thing: increased interactivity!

Pingus a free Lemmings clone for GNU/Linux and Windows

Pingus a free Lemmings clone for GNU/Linux and Windows

We all need to relax from time to time, as it has been scientifically proved that regular breaks increase productivity, as well as our general wellbeing. This is one of the reasons I decided to present what in my opinion stands for an efficient, brain cooling experience. Pingus is a lemmings-like puzzle game, which, although based on a well-known idea, namely that of combining certain abilities to attain a goal, manages to keep you on your seat in front of the computer, scenario after scenario.

For those of you who don't really know what the lemmings-like game genre is, I'll give a short description, so that when you start playing the game, you will have a general idea of what you have to do. Basically, you have a specific number of penguins from which you have to save some in order to pass the mission. Penguins start showing up in a certain point of the map, and you have to carefully guide them until they reach the exit. For that, every particular mission has certain abilities that you can equip the penguins with, in order to pass over obstacles that stand the way. For instance, you may sometimes need to equip your penguins with floaters (little propellers mounted on their head), so that when they reach a gap, they gently land on the ground, and not hit it at great speed and die. You can also make the penguins jump over gaps to reach a specific point, or better, build a bridge over the gap and never have to worry about making sure every penguin jumps over.

Other situations, like when the exit is lower than the area where the penguins are generated and there's no way to jump or land with a floater, only leave the possibility of digging. Digging is more special in Pingus, as there are practically four kinds of possibilities of doing it. The first is pretty straightforward, simply called digger, transforming a penguin into a cute, very well equipped drill worker that makes a vertical hole from the point where it is standing until there's no soil left to go through, or it reaches a piece of steel. Another possibility is the miner ability, very similar to the digger, but with a difference in terms of direction, as the miner creates not a vertical pathway, but one situated on a 45-degree angle relative to the vertical axis.

The basher is the third ability to allow the creation of tunnels in the ground for the penguin to pass through. Just in case you haven't guessed it already, it allows the penguin to dig the tunnel horizontally, starting from the point where it is at when you equip it with this ability, and ending either on the other side, with the penguin safe and sound, or stopping when reaching steel. The forth and final way of clearing obstacles is also the hardest to master, because it differs fundamentally from the first three. The name is bomber, and it pretty much says all about its purpose; when you select the bomber ability and equip a penguin with it, it doesn't explode right away, but instead a timer is triggered and, when it runs out, boom! This is an explicit sacrifice ability, as there is no way to save the penguin after you make it a bomber. You might think of it as cruel but, trust me, there are cases when there is no other way to complete the mission than by using one or several bombers.

There are other abilities as well, but I'd like to let you discover them and try to use their functionality in an efficient manner. However, there is one last comment I want to make on them. Every time you don't know how to resolve a given scenario, try to think of how you could integrate all the available abilities because, most often than not, the key ability is not the most obvious one.

The graphics of Pingus is satisfying but, given that it's a 2D game designed more for thinking than for being pleasing on the eye, it can be deemed quite good. The entertaining aspect here comes not from superb landscapes or appealing effects, but from the contentment you feel when you finish a mission. Another thing regarding the graphical aspect I’d like to note is the animation used for penguins equipped with a certain ability, the floater being my favorite one.

The Good

I am impressed with how such a simple, 2D game could keep me up until 2 in the morning, therefore I cannot but accept that either I'm too competitive to give up, or the game was too good. Seriously now, it's indeed a great game, so I recommend it for relaxing, granted you don't become obsessed with it.

The Bad

There would be much to state here if I were to say all the things that I personally would change, but that's not important, since Pingus is a very good game as it is. One thing I must say, though, and that is that there's a drastic shortage of levels. There are only twenty so levels on the Tutorial island (which are quite easy and, therefore, don't count as genuine levels) and eight Halloween maps. Maybe the developer could be kind enough to provide some new ones, or convert some of the levels in older versions to the new format.

The Truth

It has some minor, barely visible flaws, and a major downfall - too few levels, in my opinion. On the other hand, if you take the time to complete a scenario (not the Tutorial Island, but the challenging ones in Halloween), I'm sure you'll want to jump right ahead to the next map and try it out. I wish you all a good leadership over the penguins!
